CD Review- Green Day
Here it is…The first official CD review…and I was right in my initial response to what my reviews would be like. Green Day’s new CD “21st Century Breakdown” completely bites. I don’t know if they tried to make a concept CD without a concept, or just completely forgot what they were doing while recording, but this lame POS (short for piece of ….) couldn’t suck more. I would have rather had producer Butch Vig put out a new Garbage CD than have to listen to this “garbage”.
There are exactly two good songs out of 18 here, East Jesus Nowhere and Horseshoes and Handgrenades (and not because they drop a few “f” bombs in it). The first single, Know Your Enemy, is ok if you can take the constant repitition. The rest of this CD is lamer than a Kenny G record. There are three ballads on this thing…Does Billie Joe think he is Paul McCartney now? Each one is whinier than the next. He even quotes McCartney in the last one, 21 Guns, using the line “Live and Let Die”. And the chorus to this sounds oddly like Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes”. UGH!
One other problem…Do they now have to do a carnival song on every record? Songs like “Lil” and “Misery” on previous CD’s were ok, but there is another one on this CD, “Viva La Gloria (Little Girl)”. Do they now go into the studio one day and say, “Hey, we have to do that carnival sounding song today”. Is it like Eminem having to do a Slim Shady song on every record? This might be the biggest disappointment I’ve had since I found out Jessica Alba was getting married. Starving for new music, and I get this awful excuse for a CD.
Needless to say, I do not recommend listening to this CD, unless you enjoy putting a fork in your ear to ease the pain. Hopefully, someone will come to my rescue with some good music, because this surely wasn’t it.

Actually – I was afraid of this. That’s why I had not downloaded it yet. I think I feared the worse when one of our older friends in town – someone who doesn’t really listen to newer music – said it was “genius”. Then there was the truly dull performance on Saturday Night Live. On American Idiot, Billie Jo didn’t TRY to make some amazing statement. He just wrote an album of rock music.

A good review Uncle Mike. i just listened to this myself,(SIDE NOTE: if y’all havent been to http://www.lala.com yet you should check it out. a buddy of mine turned me on to it. you can listen to whole albums all the way through once for free, without having to download any crap. Thats where i listened to the new green day.) and not only is Know your enemy repetitious but the whole record just seems to run together in one blur of power chords and overly pretentious lyrics except where they brake to go to the carnival. in regards to that carnival song thats what happens when you put 18 songs on an album. I bet if you looked up all the albums in the history of music with 18 tracks there would be a carnival song on all of them. pretty poor attempt by green day from the music to the album cover, um guys blur used a similar picture for their 2003 record Think Tank. come to think of it that record sucked as well.

I would like to declare a moratorium on all records with more than 12 songs. Sometimes even 12 is too many (like the last U2). I don’t care about the CD not being full. Just give me your best stuff. Unless they are fifteen 2-3 minutes songs (like “Double Nickels on a Dime”), then don’t bother me with your half-assed ideas. Just put down the good stuff.
